Lady Slippers and Select Perennials

Lady Slippers (Limited supplies)
The lady’s slipper orchids are for many the most beautiful most fascinating of the orchids. Cypripedium is from the Greek cypress, a name for the goddess, Aphrodite, and pedilon, meaning shoe.

Our orchids are propagated from tissue culture thus do not require the micro organisms usually needed by plants found naturally in the forest. Also because they are tissue cultured we are not breaking any protection laws for these cultivars.
We offer 4-5 year old plants on all of these and should bloom. Instructions included for care.
Please note that these are not guaranteed over winter. We only ship in spring and verify each plant for live buds prior to shipping.

guttatum
This native of Alaska requires very cool summertime growing conditions.  In the lower 48 states, we recommend this species only for the northern tier of states, and then only where the maximum daytime temperature exceeds 80 F (27 C) for at most several hours at a time.  Growing this plant outdoors also requires several months of below-freezing winter temperatures for proper vernalization.  Where the climate is sufficiently cool, this species is easy to grow, but it is essentially impossible where the climate is too warm.  This species likes morning and late afternoon sun but shade during the hot part of the day.  Zones 2-4, possibly the coolest parts of Zone 5

This species likes a shady site in the south but prefers increasingly open conditions northward.

-The creeping root-stock, or underground stem, is thick and white, twisted and full of knots, with circular scars at intervals, left by the leaf stems of previous years. It throws up stems that attain a height of from 18 inches to 2 feet, or even more, which are for some considerable portion of their length erect, but finally bend gracefully over. They are round, pale-green in colour, and bare half-way up; from thence to the top, large and broadly-oval leaves grow alternately on the stem, practically clasping it by the bases. All the leaves have the character of turning one way, being bent slightly upward, as well as to one side, and have very marked longitudinal ribbing on their surfaces.
The flowers are in little drooping clusters of from two to seven, springing from the axils of the leaves, but hanging in an opposite direction to the foliage. They are tubular in shape, of a creamy or waxy white, topped with a yellowish-green, and sweet-scented
